Late Summer Birches (2-Day Intermediate Embroidery Class)
This class was
introduced at EGA's Tennessee Valley Region Seminar in June 2007.
Come to the top of the hill and gaze
out past a grove of birch trees to the distant hills obscured by
a gentle mist. The near lake and distant lake reflect the
bright sun of morning in late summer. Emphasis will be on
color concepts for creating realistic landscapes--using
highlights and shadows to produce form, capturing the shine on
water and the texture of evergreens as they march down the hill
and into the distance. The design incorporates both
machine embroidery and hand stitching.
A painted and drawn canvas with pre-machine stitching in the
grass and evergreen areas will be provided for each student.
Each canvas will be unique. Sewing machine techniques will be
demonstrated in class and a sewing machine will be available for
practice if desired. Three-dimensional stitches for tree
trunks, use of flat silk, appliqué of organza overlay and
teacher's own process for producing realistic evergreens will be
covered. Stitches used in this design include L-stitch and
pinhead for anchoring threads, straight stitch in many sizes and
directions, French knots, fly stitch, stem stitch, backstitch,
Casalguidi and tied chain stitch.
