A scene from a
dreamscape, “Lighthouse Moon” incorporates a silken moon and
organza clouds appliquéd to a painted canvas provided by
teacher. The mountains are defined with tulle. Sky and
mountains are overlaid with organza. The lighthouse is stitched
in long and short stitch with Splendor silk. The mid-ground
shore is stitched with Watercolours and the evergreen trees with
floss using teacher’s own textured random stitch technique. The
barn and foreground “tundra” are appliqués. The tundra
foreground appliqué will be provided by teacher and students
will add French knots by hand. The ocean is laid floss and flat
silk. To bring the ocean to life, silver reflections are added
using fil d’argent.
This is a set
project class that provides teachable moments for color and
design concepts. Creating textural contrasts, using highlights
and shadows to produce form, color concepts for aerial
perspective, use of warm and cool colors, integrating machine
stitching with hand embroidery, and random stitch methods are
covered.
Teaching Time: Two Day. For a
four-day class, students will paint the canvas, machine stitch
the foreground tundra and have more in-depth color and design
discussion.
